The new year is here. In 2018, we want to provide you with some insight on how to plan and set attainable goals over the next 12 months.
Setting goals and having a plan are the most important components of all successful training and nutrition programs. It’s important to set short-term goals that are within reach to reach the bigger picture.
I’ll start with what we call “dumb goals” at CrossFit Dark Athletics. These goals tend to be vague, are difficult to measure, and often have no deadline.
For example, someone might say, “I want to look better and lose weight.” Unfortunately, there is no actionable goal in that statement. That’s why these goals tend to have the lowest chance of success. It’s impossible to tell if or when you’ve achieved them.
As a result, you are likely to get discouraged and lose interest. You’ll abandon your goals in the first place. And that’s the ultimate failure.
Want to know the best approach? Set smart goals is to choose ones that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.
For example, rather than simply saying “I want to lose weight,” attach a specific number and a timeline to it. Alternatively, “I want to lose five pounds in 35 days” is a more informed and specific goal.
To take it a step even further, set a specific lifestyle habit to achieve this goal: “I will exercise three days a week and eat three balanced meals for the next five weeks.”
You can see how these goals can be more effective than the former. They require specific instructions for you to follow. They require a timeline, which allows you to measure your progress throughout the entire year.
