Our Founder

Joe Cosenza

Joe Cosenza has been in the fitness industry for almost 10 years. He started working out when he was 14 years old for High School Football with his brother, Frank, who he credits with starting and keeping him on track throughout the years. Joe began doing weightlifting and CrossFit in 2008/09 and noticed the amazing euphoria felt after each workout. The challenges faced each day with the WOD were exactly what he was chasing. While doing CrossFit from 2010-2013, weightlifting became more interesting and he wanted to learn more about it. He began training in a small weightlifting gym in South Brooklyn and from there kept increasing knowledge until he was able to open CrossFit Dark Athletics with his partner, Matt Lebovits in 2016. Joe is constantly improving his education and has been growing the CFDA community since inception. Our gym combines every aspect of exercise science, ensuring that you get the results you want. We offer proven workouts to build energy and endurance. We combine that with sensible eating plans that help you hit that sweet spot where you lose fat while you gain muscle.

We want our gym to be a thriving like-minded community of fitness enthusiasts that support and encourage each other. We aim to do this by combining individual training with group classes of people at your level and coaches that understand your particular needs and goals.

Our Professional Coaches

Stephanie Bock

Steph is one of our Assistant Coaches. She is a former college Hammer Throw athlete at Georgian Court. Steph provides a well rounded Coaching experience and loves to help people improve their strength and health. Qualifications: CrossFit Level 1 (L-1) USAW Sports Performance Coach Nutrition

Justin Janus

Justin Janus was one of the first members here at Crossfit Dark Athletics. He began as a young college weightlifter interested in growing his knowledge for the sport as well as gaining strength and size! Justin has been helping serve the CFDA community for almost 2 years as a Coach. Qualifications: CrossFit Level 1 (L-1)

Theresa Sanzone

Theresa has been Coaching here at CrossFit Dark Athletics since 2020. Theresa grew up as an athlete and continues to build her strength with our daily workouts. She is using her time here to help our athletes stay motivated and move better and is currently studying to be a Physical Therapist. Qualifications: CrossFit Level 1 (L-1)

Heather Mentone

Heather Mentone is a Registered Nurse by day and an awesome Coach by night! Heather is a fun coach and keeps the energy levels up as she works with our members to make them stronger and faster. Heather has been serving the CFDA community as a Coach since 2019. Qualifications: CrossFit Level 1 (L-1)

Samantha Kuhles

Former College Softball Player, Sam is one of our competitive weightlifters and crossfit athletes. Sam provides a lot of technical guidance to her classes and specializes in enhancing the performance of any athlete. Qualifications: CrossFit Level 1 (L-1) USAW Sports Performance Coach

Mo Omar

Mo is our Youth instructor for our Teens program. Mo is a Nationally ranked Olympic Weightlifter and former College football player. Mo provides a fun environment for the young athletes to thrive in. Qualifications: USAW Sports Performance Coach 2nd Place Nationals (2017, 2018, 2021)

Carolina Safar

Carolina is our Media coordinator and yoga instructor. She provides a fun and smooth flow for everyone to get a good stretch after workouts.
